Bathymetry of the Kermadec Trench
By: Eric Dellaratta
The Bathymetry of the Kermadec trench is remarkable. The Kermadec Trench is earth's second-deepest ocean trench. The trench reaches depths of 10,000 meters in selected regions. That is five times deeper than the Grand Canyon, and is deeper than Mount Everest is tall! The Trench is so deep, much of the region has been unexplored by researchers. Since it has been unexplored, there are most likely a plethora of species of fish and other organisms that scientist haven't even discovered yet.
The Kermadec Trench features the largest underwater volcano arc on planet earth. There are more than 50 submarine volcanoes that stretch up to 1500 miles along the trench. Underwater mountain ranges in the Kermadec Trench reach up to 2000 meters high
